I’ve loved dragons ever since I was little watching them in movies like the Neverending Story and reading them in books. So of course, I have a fascination for books with dragons!

Dragon Champon by E.E. Knight
This is a coming of age story told in our main character’s point of view. His name is Auron and he’s a rare gray dragon who we see from hatchling all the way to wisened adult dragon. He goes through life having adventures among dwarves, elves, humans and other creatures.
This series is worth the read! Getting to read through a dragon’s POV the entire time is definitely going to be up your alley if you’re into dragons as much as I am.
As I write this blog post, I am currently reading this book and absolutely loving it! This is the book to read right now if you are into dark fantasy, enemies to lovers plots. You’ve got action. You’ve got magic. You’ve got spice. You’ve got dragons that can reduce you to ashes in seconds… who wouldn’t love it?
Violet was training to be a scribe her whole life, but her mother had other plans for her. Violet enters the riders quadrant to train to become a dragon rider or die trying (and many people do indeed die trying). Plus there are people out to kill her because of her famour General mother including the flaming hot, badass Xaden Riorson. Enter the world of Basgiath college for a truly addicting read.
A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan
Think Victorian England, but with dragons. Lady Trent is a head strong young woman out to study dragons and become the world’s most preeminent dragon naturalist.
Historical fiction that has badass female characers, adventure and dragons? Count me in! Did I mention theres also beautiful illustrations throughout the whole book?
His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
Since I seem to love one-sentence summaries, this is the Napoleonic Wars, but with dragons.
Captain Will’s seafaring life is turned upside down when he bonds with one of the world’s most extraordinary creatures: a dragon. Him and his dragon, Temeraire, will be thrust into a crash course on airborne battle as they prepare to fight against Napolean’s only dragonic forces.
Those into war novels will most definitely love this novel! Naomi Novik never disappoints with her fantasies.

When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill
In this 1950s feminist novel, we have the Mass Dragoning of 1955. When thousands of women suddenly transformed into dragons and flew away. Why? What about those they left behind? Enter Alex, whose aunt transformed into a dragon that fateful day, but not her mother.
This is a story of women. How women are constrained and controlled by society’s expectations. If you want dragons that are more of a symbol than the main event, go for this novel.
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
If you want a high fantasy monster of a tome this book is for you! With evil fire-breathing wyrms and good water and sky dwelling dragons, there is no shortage of dragons in this book. With complex storylines, an epic battle between good and evil, and of course lots of dragons, this is definitely essential dragon sci-fi.
YA & Kids Books
Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
Another very cool premise for a YA book here. In a medieval world where humans and dragons live in a tentative peace, dragons can shape themselves into human form and lend their mathematical minds to scholars and teachers.
Seraphina is a mysterious girl who is drawn into the investigation of the murder of a member of the royal family. As she helps the royal guard solve the murder, she struggles to protect her own secret, one that if found out could cost her life.
The Tea Dragon Society by Kay O'Neill
This is just about the cutest book I’ve ever read. The story, artwork and characters are just stunning. The best part is there is more than one! This is the first in a series of three graphic novels.
Pictured on the cover is Greta and Minette who learn from about the dying form of tea dragon caretaking from tea shop owners and partners, Hesekiel and Erik.
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
I know this series seems to get a lot of shit, but I devoured it when I was in middle school and remember it fondly. I don’t think I could make a dragon books list without including this.
A small town farm boy named Eragon seemingly has his life turned upside down when he finds what seems to be a polished blue stone in the woods. It turns out to be a very rare dragon egg that only hatches in front of who it will bond with. Eragon and his new dragon, Saphira, are chased down by the empire and the fate of the world seemingly rests in his hands.
